Το πρόζεκτ (I heard it) through the Grapevine, αποτελεί την εναρκτήρια δραστηριότητά μας στη Μπιενάλε ΟΜΟΝΟΙΑ.

(I heard it) through the Grapevine, the opening project of our participation in Biennale OMONOIA, focuses on wine and winemaking, as a product and a process loaded with cultural, anthropological, social, economic and political significances (small-scale production, home economy, labor conditions, urbanism). Winemaking in its historical aspect can be seen as a factor of community formation with strong bonds to the earth and agricultural production. Mesogeia* is an area on the east of Athens, with a long tradition in wine making. Its vicinity to the city of Athens permitted families with a permanent residence in the city to own a small vineyard in Mesogeia and make their own small-scale, domestic wine production. Some among our group members share the experience of the vintage in Mesogeia, performed by the family and friends in a mood of regressive, joyful contact with nature and agriculture. Changes in the European border legislation in the beginning of the nineties brought about a flow of immigrants that would get illegally employed under extremely low wages, which contributed to some extend to the creation of the Greek myth of prosperity of the nineties. This also signaled a change of paradigm for the aforementioned domestic wine making. People would rather employ seasonal workers than keep up with a traditional and social practice. In the same time, the area underwent rapid and unplanned urbanization. These part-collective and part-personal narratives are among the issues that we care to explore throughout a performative, relational study. Over the past months we paid often visits to Mesogeia, where, in close contact with locals, wine makers and laborers, recorded the vintage, produced and bottled 60 liters of our own Savatiano wine.
* The name of Mesogeia in Greek is the same as the one for the Mediterranean Sea.
